Woodland Community College Online Orientation

Welcome to Woodland Community College!

To help make your college experience rewarding and successful Woodland Community College requires all new, transfer, and students who have not enrolled at a district campus within the last three years to complete the Matriculation process.

You may be eligible for an exemption by meeting two(2) or more of the criteria listed below:

• Have completed an associate or higher degree (verification required)
• Will be enrolling in performance classes only (e.g. music, drama, physical education activity classes)
• Enrolling in fewer than six units
• Not planning to earn a degree or certificate
• Enrolling in job-skill upgrade, self-improvement or general interest courses
• Enrolling in classes for which you have previous training, i.e., firefighter taking an E.M.T. class
• You are planning on enrolling in any of the following specialized program: Fire Academy
• Still attending high school and attempting to enroll in a college course(s) through the Concurrent Enrollment program.

Completing the Matriculation Process

The matriculation process includes:

1. Applying to the College
   If you have not already done so, you need to complete an application for admission. This can be done online. Once your application is accepted you will receive a Colleague Number (student ID #).
   
   
2. Completing the Placement Test
   The placement test measures your current level of ability in three disciplines that are key to success in college: English, math and reading. You must have placement scores to be eligible to enroll in courses in these three areas. Additionally, counselors use the placement results and other information when working with students to develop their course schedule.
   
   It is important that you take the test seriously in order to generate results that are an accurate reflection of your skill level in the three areas. It is suggested that you review basic math principles. You can also review some sample test questions online. You can schedule an appointment to take the test at Admissions and Records.
   
   Note: if you have completed a college placement exam at another campus you can bring a copy of your scores to a counselor for evaluation purposes. If you do not have a copy of your scores you can sign a form to release your scores to Woodland Community College. If you have completed a course in English, reading or math at another college, bring a copy of your transcripts to show to your counselor. The counselor will determine the appropriate placement at the next level if needed.
   
   
3. Completing Orientation
   The orientation program covers four main topics:
   • Woodland Community College policies and procedures that you need to know to accomplish your goals and, more importantly, to avoid mistakes that may add one or more semesters of time;
   • Support services available;
   • Rights and responsibilities of students and,
   • Optional activities that are available that enhance a student’s college experience.

   The orientation is offered in two formats:
   
   Face to Face Orientation sessions are conducted by counseling faculty. At the conclusion of the orientation you will work with a counselor to develop a schedule of classes for the semester. The advantage of the workshop is that the counselor can respond to any questions you might have. Note: If you are a first-time college student you are strongly encouraged to select this option.
   
   Orientation dates can be found in the current semester class schedule.
   
   An online orientation which requires passing that the student pass an orientation quiz. Upon passing, please present the Orientation Verification Form to the Admissions and Records office. Please either stop in or call Admissions and Records at (530) 661-5700 for appointment availability. First-time college students enrolling in more than six units are required to see a counselor. All other students are encouraged to meet with a counselor if they have questions about course selections.
   
   

4. Follow up appointment with your counselor
   The focus of the initial meeting with your counselor after the orientation is to select appropriate courses for your first semester at Woodland Community College. At the follow up meeting, your counselor will want to hear about your educational/career goal. If you have already developed a clear-cut goal your counselor will help you develop a Student Educational Plan (SEP), a semester-by-semester listing of the courses you should take to achieve your goal. If you are unclear about what career you want to pursue, your counselor can review the resources available to assist your decision.
